CCYC LEADERSHIP
If you have found your way to this site, then you must have heard about, or have already explored, Cape Charles by water. Maybe you are a “been”, “come”, or “stay” here who simply enjoys the camaraderie of other sailors. It is with this in mind that the Cape Charles Yacht Club was founded in mid-2012 for the purpose of encouraging and supporting yachting in Cape Charles and the surrounding waters; promoting social and recreational fellowship among boaters in Cape Charles; and advocating safety, boating education and etiquette, and responsible marine stewardship. These goals require competent leadership. Below is an introduction to the Club's Officers for 2022.
Rob Harris
Commodore
Rob grew up boating on the Long Island Sound. He loves sailing but became a motor boater when he moved to Virginia Beach in 1995. He and his family boated all over the Lynnhaven, Broad Bay, Linkhorn and Chesapeake on their 22' Grady White. Recently, Rob upgraded to his current 40' Sabre - Yikes! Since moving full-time to Cape Charles in 2017, Rob and Patsy have been cruising all over the bay.
Davies Storrs
Vice Commodore
Davies was born and raised in Annapolis, Maryland, learning to sail at Severn Sailing Association and spending many summer days on the Severn River. Virginia Tech graduates, Davies and his wife, Beth, lived and worked in Virginia Beach for 40 years where they raised their 3 children. They owned and operated numerous boats along the way. Moving to Cape Charles in 2018, they enjoy spending time with their children and 4 grandchildren, the beach, and anything nautical.
Jim Liepman
Rear Commodore
Civic & Charitable Engagement Co-Captain
Born and raised in Kansas, Jim joined the U.S. Navy in 1967. After starting as a Boson’s Mate swabbing decks on the USS Holder (DD-819), he later graduated from the University of Kansas and was commissioned a U.S. Air Force second lieutenant in 1980. Retiring in 2001 he continues to support the Air Force as a contractor. Jim and his wife Maggie moved to Cape Charles and joined the CCYC in 2017.
Mark Henry
Past Commodore
Mark served as CCYC Commodore in 2021
Mark loves being in and around water -- A licensed USCG Master of 100 GT for 45 years, he has been a passenger boat captain in the Washington, D.C. area and on the Chesapeake Bay, a yacht delivery captain, and has enjoyed a lifetime of watersports, including SCUBA diving. Mark has found Cape Charles the ideal place to live. After years of motorboating, he purchased S/V No Rush a few years ago and currently enjoys sailing on the Chesapeake Bay.
Rob Smithwick
Past Commodore
Rob served as CCYC Commodore in 2019.
Captain Rob has spent his entire life boating on the Chesapeake Bay. Born in 1962, his first memories are of fishing with his father, grand-father, and uncles around the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Spot, Croaker, Trout, and Flounder were often lunch and / or dinner. Chesapeake Bay Blue Crabs also crawled onto the table often. His boating started small with a 12-foot aluminum boat powered by a 6HP Evenrude outboard. Over the years, the boats grew to a 14-foot center console, a 21-foot deep-V, 25-foot cuddy cabin, and a 28-foot cuddy cabin. Most recently a 40’ Deadrise. He and his wife Nancy love boating, kayaking, beaches and sunsets in Cape Charles!
Maggie Deuel
Membership Captain
Maggie has always been drawn to bodies of water. She loved growing up on a small island in New England's Narragansett Bay. After getting her nursing degree she moved to San Francisco, also known as the “City by the Bay". In 1983, Maggie moved to Virginia Beach. After working 43 years in the medical field, she moved to Cape Charles in 2017 where she and her husband Jim built their “forever” home in Bay Creek. She enjoys kayaking and spending warm days at the beach.
Walter Childs
Treasurer
Walter grew up sailing in the area of Annapolis, Maryland. He has served as a crew member on races and has cruised between Carter Creek and Philadelphia. Walter has been a crew member on friends’ sailboat deliveries between Annapolis and New England and has chartered sailboats in Greece and the BVIs.
Paula Wells
Social Captain
Paula was born in Alaska, grew up in St Louis and graduated from the University of Missouri at Columbia. She and her husband, Bob , hopscotched around the Mid West with Bob’s railroad career before settling into the Virginia Beach area for 27 years, raising their three boys. Paula worked in the non-profit and marketing arenas before she and Bob retired and moved to the Eastern Shore. However, the purchase of Mimosa Farm in Cheriton in 2018 made for a very brief retirement with the undertaking of the 1850’s farmhouse renovation, along with assuming ownership and sole operation of The Barn At Mimosa special event venue. She and Bob are now living the dream, soaking up the beauty of the water views bordering Mimosa and look forward to investigating the magic of the Eastern Shore by boat. Watching their eight grandchildren run wild on the farm adds to the many blessings of Shore life.
Ron Wrucke
Communications Captain
Ron and his wife, Sherry, both retired in June 2006 and found the perfect place here in Cape Charles. Besides photography (http://easternshoreimaging.com), Ron's other hobbies include golf and poking around the yard and gardens. It is amazing how much satisfaction one can derive from making a long putt or destroying a big weed … !!! Where better than Cape Charles on the Eastern Shore of Virginia to pursue these retirement dreams?
Bob Smith
Beverage Captain
A former Marine Corps Officer and retired Steel Company Executive, Bob and his wife Linda moved full time to Cape Charles in 2018. Raised at the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia as a rower since the age of 15. Bob became a Master Oarsman, Rowing Coach, a Dock Master and Boat Club Manager prior to settling here in the Bay Creek section of Cape Charles. We are a water family and look forward to working with the CCYC,

His boating range includes the Florida Keys, St. Johns River, St. Augustine, Hawaii, Intracoastal and all over Chesapeake Bay. He enjoys long distance biking, motorcycles, scuba, spear fishing and most of all sailing.
Dave Cooper

Michigan and the lakes in Northern Indiana. Dave and his wife Cris have lived in Virginia Beach on the Lynnhaven River for over 30 years. They have enjoyed boating on the Chesapeake Bay in their 29’ SeaRay. Last year they bought a 25’ Bay Boat with a shallow draft to enjoy less time sitting on the sandbars ... 😉 They now boat on both the Bay and Seaside with their three daughters, their husbands and six grandchildren. They built a new home in Bay Creek in 2019. Being on the water is their passion.
Dave Steward
Civic & Charitable Engagement Captain
Captain Dave first learned to sail in the ‘60’s as a teenager in Hawai’i. Throughout the years and after serving 4 years in the United States Navy, he sailed now and again during the ‘70’s & ‘80’s in various parts of the United States, but work and raising two children always took precedence over his love for the life-style. Then, in the mid ‘90’s his passion for sailing was renewed when he ventured back on the Chesapeake Bay with The Sailing Club for a weekend of cruising, anchoring out and spending time with fellow sailors. From that moment, Capt. Dave realized a return to the water; the wind and the swell had to be part of his life once again .. and it has. Dave has logged thousands of miles sailing the Chesapeake Bay, Long Island Sound, Block Island Sound, the East and West Coast of the United States, and sails to Bermuda and most of the Caribbean Islands.
Nicki & Paul Tiffany
Road Clean-up Captains
Paul & Nicki have always been working to protect and take care of the environment. They love canoeing and kayaking, as well as hiking and birding. On all of their adventures, picking up trash is always a big part of them. They are excited to be Captain and First Mate of Road Clean-Up, and hope a lot of other members will join them for our clean-up days.
